Border Basics |
 |
|
Wavy borders getting you down? Here are a few tips to help
flatten those borders!
- Measure the quilt across the quilt not only in the middle
but also top and bottom. Use the average of the measurements.
- Cut your fabric to the length measured in step one.
- Pin border, starting in the middle of the quilt and ease
fabric in on ends.
- Press borders once sewn in place with the seams going
outward (away from the quilt)
- Use an accurate 1/4" seam allowance.
- If the outer border is pieced, sew a 1/8" stay stitch all
around the outside edge to keep the pieces from coming apart.
- Never stretch or pull your border to fit.
Keep in mind these guidelines and your borders should be less
wavy!

A Fat Quarter is NOT A Body Part! |
 |
|
We quilters have our own lingo that we share some of which may be
unfamiliar to those who do not share our enthusiasm for fabric!
Many quilters and fabriholics alike collect fabric, much in the
form of fat quarters. A quarter yard of fabric is 1/4 of a whole
yard, approximately 9" by 42". A fat quarter is still a quarter of
yard, but cut approximately 18" x 22". Rather than long and
"skinny", its more square.
I was once asked what I do with all those fat quarters that I
collect. I chuckled. Make quilts! Duh!
What kind of quilts can you make with a fat quarter? she so
kindly asks.
Well, I thought about that. So here is a list of some of my
favorite projects that use fat quarters.
- Yellow Brick Road pattern by Atkinson Designs
- Wrap It to Go Notebook cover pattern by Hedgehog Quilts
- Baby Magic 9 Patch pattern by Beverly Ingram
- Totes for Kids pattern by Pine Meadows Designs
- Fat Quarter Frenzy Book by Susan Purney- Mark
- Super Simple Fat Quarter Quilts book by Possibilities
- 40 Fabulous Quick Cut Quilts Book by Evelyn Sloppy
- Turning Twenty pattern by Tricia Cribbs
- Phenomenal Fat Quarter Quilts book by M'Liss Rae Hawley
The list goes on, and yes, they are all available at Shoo Fly
Quilts!
